About Free Shipping Day

Free Shipping Day Canada, scheduled for Dec. 12, is sponsored by the founders of Free Shipping Day in the United States. After a tremendous response from Canadian shoppers last year, the one-day event returns this year with even more merchants offering free shipping and delivery by Christmas Eve.

Both Free Shipping Day events are the creation of Saskatchewan-born Luke Knowles, founder of FreeShipping.ca and FreeShipping.org, which have blossomed into more than a dozen frugality-related websites. In 2008, Knowles and a bare-bones staff created the first event in just two extremely hectic weeks. The concept sprang from Knowles’ belief that merchants and shoppers alike would relish the opportunity to extend online-shopping deadlines for the holidays.

By 2010, the shopping holiday earned a place in the record books as the third-heaviest day of online shopping in U.S. history. The astonishing total of $954 million spent online was an increase of nearly 60% over 2009. The trend continued in 2011 when shoppers spent more than $1 billion in the 24-hour Free Shipping Day window.

Though Free Shipping Day is relatively new to Canada, major media outlets such as CTV, CBC, The Globe and Mail and Yahoo! Canada reported the story, along with other innumerable national, regional and local media.

This year the Free Shipping Day team is excited to provide Canadians with another opportunity to shop at the last minute and still receive free shipping with delivery by Christmas Eve. Don't forget to mark your calendar for 12-12-13!
